'Compensate climate-hit states'

Bss, Dhaka
Awami League (AL) Presidium Member Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun yesterday said developed countries must compensate for the damage caused by climate change, because they are responsible for it. "Bangladesh and other poor countries are the worst-affected and they need support to face the effects of climate change," said Yusuf while addressing a discussion meeting in the city. Jatiya Ganotantrik League organised the discussion meeting to commemorate those died in devastating cyclonic storm in 1970, Sidr and Aila. Deputy Attorney General Shahidul Islam and Prof Omar Faruk addressed the discussion with AZM Mostafa Kamal in the chair. Addressing as the chief guest, Yusuf said the present government has raised the adverse impacts of the climate change to the international community. But previous governments did not take this vital issue seriously and no steps were taken to draw the attention of the world community, he added. The south and southwestern parts of Bangladesh would be washed away if steps are not taken immediately, he said, adding that building an embankment from Teknaf to Satkhira could be helpful to protect millions of people facing the threats of natural calamities.
