Schoolgirl 'commits suicide'

A schoolgirl allegedly committed suicide at her residence in the city's Uttara on Friday. The victim, Shamima Akhter Shammi, 16, daughter of Abdus Sattar of Faridpur, was an SSC examinee of Uttara High School. Police recovered the body from her parent's house at sector-10 in Uttara around 12:00am. Quoting the victim's family members, Sub-Inspector Zahir Iqbal of Uttara Police Station said Shammi's mother rebuked her Friday afternoon over suspicion of involvement in an affair. Later, Shammi hanged herself from the ceiling fan in her room with a scarf around 9:00pm, the SI said, adding that family members rushed her to the hospital following the incident. Police sent the body to Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy. An unnatural death case was filed with Uttara Police Station in this regard.
