Thousands of passengers streaming into the capital after the Eid holidays were stranded for hours in a 5-kilometere tailback at Daulatdia ferry terminal of Rajbari yesterday. Hundreds of vehicles were seen lined up on the Rajbari-Khulna highway stretching from the Goalunda Zero point to Goalunda Feed Mill around 3:00pm. BIWTC officials at Daulatdia office told The Daily that Ro-Ro ferry Bir Shrestha Matiur Rahman had remained anchored at the floating workshop of the Paturia ghat for repair since early hours of Friday. Bir Shrestha Hamidur Rahman had been anchored there for repair for a day. However, the second ferry started operation from 10:00pm Friday. Jillur Rahman, deputy general manager, BIWTC Daulatdia office, said nine Ro-Ro ferries and one K-type ferry were now in operation on the Paturia-Daulatdia route. More than a thousand regular vehicles were ferried across the river in the last 24 hours, he said. Some passengers were seen to have started walking towards the Daulatdia terminal to avoid the 5km tailback. The people of 21 south and southwestern districts have started returning to their workplaces in Dhaka through the terminal after the Eid holidays.
