Latest studies found that even the pasteurized milk contains harmful elements. To boost milk production, dairy farmers inject their cows with rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone), a genetically engineered growth hormone which remains active in the milk even after pasteurization. The rBGH makes cows sick and causes so many adverse effects including mastitis. The rBGH in milk increases the level of Insulin Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) which is incriminated as a cause of breast, colon and prostate cancer in humans. The synthetic hormone also reduces milk's protein content. It has more than twenty toxic effects. All dairy products including cheese, butter, cream, powdered milk, etc, made by the contaminated milk are also harmful to human health. Many countries have banned the use of rBGH. The campaigners against the use of rBGH are encouraging people to use organic milk, that is, milk produced from natural grass-fed cows in hygienic environment without administration of any artificial growth hormones like rBGH, antibiotics, or additives. In Bangladesh, modern dairy system has been introduced for profitable dairy business. But investigations should be done to ascertain whether our dairy farm is using rBGH and the imported dairy products including cheese, powdered milk contain any harmful elements. Small country dairy farms should be set up and livestock extension activities should be intensified to train and motivate farmers in raising cows, goats, etc. in natural conditions.
