The main opposition BNP will begin a two-day countrywide demonstration from today demanding cancellation of the government's decision to raise price of petroleum products which would “adversely affect prices of essential commodities”. The demonstration includes rallies at district levels today followed by meetings and processions in the divisional headquarters tomorrow. “We will go for tougher agitation if the government does not withdraw its decision,” said Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir after declaring the programmes at a press briefing at BNP's central office in the city's Nayapaltan yesterday. The acting secretary general of BNP also said the government hiked the prices thrice in the last six months though the prices in international markets are going down. “We believe that the price was hiked as the country's economy is in crisis due to the government's failure. People's suffering will increase as prices of essential commodities and transport fares increase due to this price hike,” he added. Earlier on Sunday night, the BNP standing committee sat and discussed about the latest political situation and finalised protest programme and some organisational decisions. Accordingly, BNP will observe Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani's death anniversary on November 17 and celebrate BNP senior vice-president Tarique Rahman's birthday on November 19. On November 20, countrywide discussions would be held marking the death anniversary of Dr Milon, assassinated by miscreants on November 27, 1990 while participating in an agitation against the then autocrat ruler HM Ershad. On December 6, BNP would celebrate the fall of the former military ruler Ershad. The party also declared holding weeklong programmes marking Victory Day on December 16. A national committee, headed by standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, was also formed.
