Research on climate change adaptation urgent
Effective research must immediately be carried out to find new ways to adapt to the effects of climate change, threatening the livelihoods of Bangladeshis, especially those dependent on natural resources, said speakers in Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday.
They were speaking at a conference titled “Community based adaptation to climate change: Theoretical aspects” at RU senate building, participated by over 200 teachers, researchers and climate activists from home and abroad.
RU sociology department, Action Research for Community Adaptation in Bangladesh of Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies and International Institute for Environment and Development, with Actionaid Bangladesh's support, jointly organised the programme.
Speakers said people living in rural areas are most prone to the damages of cyclones, floods and droughts, effects of climate change induced by the industrialised countries.
A continuation of this change would cause the end of the rainy and winter seasons, affecting the diversity of the country's environments and, in turn, the economy, said the speakers.
Church of Bangladesh advisor James Spender presented the keynote paper at the conference, where a total of 16 research papers were presented.
RU social science faculty Dean Prof Mizanuddin presided over the daylong conference while RU Vice Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan and Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Mohammad Nurullah were present as the chief and special guests respectively.
