Over half the households in Bangladesh have no connection to the national power grid, according to government statistics. The country's power plants can generate about 4,200 megawatts of electricity, but the demand is more than 5,500 megawatts a day. Only 30 per cent of our people have access to electricity, meaning the overwhelming majority still depends on kerosene and wood for meeting their daily energy needs. But now villagers are buying more solar panels, mostly on credit, from private organisations that promote renewable energy. The use of solar panels is growing, as a range of non-profit groups are now providing solar panels at a low cost across the country. As the government has committed to produce at least 5 percent of the country's energy through renewable sources by 2015, and 10 percent by 2020, it has to act fast to achieve the goal.
