Tejgaon airfield gets domestic airport status
Decision strengthens Air Force objection to metro route thru 'Bijoy Sarani'
(November 19, 2011) What a joke! The BAF has smoothly arm-twisted the CAAB to put the much needed metro rail network into jeopardy. What a shame! This will evidently destroy the beauty of our parliament.
Peter Pan We will closely watch how many domestic flights are operated from Tejgaon Airport. And where will the Public Service Commission office be shifted?
Shubhro Ahmed Can't we spend a few million to shift this airport and save the billion dollar metro rail project? By doing so, we can get a new airport for BAF with modern amenities as well as some high rises in and around Tejgaon.
Anis Sazzad I would like to ask the reporter, do you have any idea how much it cost to construct an airfield and how many airfields the Bangladesh government has constructed since our liberation? Is the BAF so insane that it wants to abandon such a valuable set up in the name of modernisation when other options are open? I hope the reporter will write about the fact that the land in and around Tejgaon airfield area is very good for construction and that's why the real-estate companies and developers are after this airfield!
A retired air force officer It is sad that we are thinking of air force as an alien force. This airfield should remain for BAF's use. Thinking about shifting the airport is unwise. Will the nation be able to establish such an airport again? We can build the metro rail according to the plan of BAF.
Suman If the national parliament complex is not affected by this metro rail project, then it is ok. But if it gets affected, then the government should think about another route. It is very sad that the city planners of the government do not have any respect for our famous architectures.
A reader Our renowned city planners should be ashamed of their plans. The government should think thrice before making such a decision.
S. Ali This is very unfortunate for the nation. When the public sentiment is going against the air force's stance, how could the PM ask the leaders of various pressure groups to hold a dialogue with the BAF to reach a consensus?
Mohammed Shah Alam Khan We don't want any metro rail there. City dwellers need greenery and fresh air like in the cantonments and DOHS areas.
Anonymous The Civil Aviation authority is simply working like a muscleman. People should be united to resist such an unwise decision.
Mahboob Hossain Should we see this as part of a conspiracy? The blame should go to the BAF not to the CAAB chief, as he is still active in his service holding the rank of an air commodore.
Sheikh Monirul Islam, Opee Our policymakers should work for public interest. Good strategy and implementation can make Bangladesh a flourishing country.
