Hearing not held as PWs did not turn up
Deposition in the sensational case for grenade attack on British High Commissioner Anwar Chowdhury could not be recorded as none of the prosecution witnesses appeared before the court yesterday.
District and Sessions Judge Sylhet Md. Abdul Gafur conducted the court as Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Diproman Sarker was transferred to Jamlpur as district judge. He left the city days ago.
The accused were on dock as the trail judge fixed February 7 for the next hearing. Deposition of 50 PWs have so far been recorded, court sources said.
They said the 30-day extension, given earlier, to complete the trial by the Speedy Trial Tribunal ends on February 14.
Special public prosecutor Fokhruddin Ahmed told the Daily Star yesterday that even on repeated summons, some important PWs did not appear before the court for unknown reasons. This is delaying the trial. Deposition will resume only after the new judge joins, he added.
There may be another 30-day extension for the trial, Ahmed said. Recording PWs' deposition started on 26 August.
Three persons were killed while the Bangladesh-born British High Commissioner and 70 others were injured in the grenade attack on the premises of the shrine of Hajrat Shahjalal (RA) after Juma prayers on May 21, 2004.
