Lokman Murder

Ashraf Sarkar on fresh remand

Star Report
Ashraful Islam Sarkar alias Ashraf Sarker, one of the accused in the Narsingdi mayor Lokman Hossain murder, was taken on a three-day fresh remand yesterday. Meanwhile, Majeda Begum, mother of the slain mayor, called a press conference at her Basail residence today to express frustration over the investigating officials' 'failure' to arrest the masterminds behind her son's assassination. She will also seek the prime minister's help in the matter, said family sources. Besides, Lokman's family has been demanding the resignation of Posts and Telecommunications Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed in a bid to avoid interference in the investigation. Rajiuddin's younger brother Salauddin Ahmed is the prime accused in the much-talked about murder case. Investigating Officer Mamunur Rashid Mandal produced Ashraf before the Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court in Narsingdi yesterday, seeking a fresh five-day remand. Magistrate Ashikul Khabir granted a three-day remand. Narsingdi police arrested Ashraf from Dhaka on November 16 and took him on a 10-day remand. His elder brother Matin Sarkar, former Narsingdi mayor, is another accused in the case. Police said Matin is a fugitive while Lokman's family members told reporters earlier that Matin was arrested on November 17. The investigating officials have so far arrested seven people, including Ashraf, in connection with the killing. Police are yet to arrest the masterminds behind the murder. Lokman was assassinated on November 1 at the district Awami League office on Sadar Road. His brother Kamruzzaman filed a murder case with Narsingdi Sadar Model Police Station accusing 14 people in this connection.
