Selina Akter, mother of Shaheed Dr Milon, demanded trial of the Ershad-led government for the death of her son, who was killed this day on the Dhaka University (DU) campus during the anti-Ershad movement in 1990. “If we want to get rid of the nation's stigma, we have to hold trial of the Ershad-led government,” she said at a discussion in the city. Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) organised the discussion on the Dhaka Medical College (DMC) premises marking the 21st death anniversary of Shaheed Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon. After Milon, the then joint secretary general of BMA, was killed by armed cadres of the then autocratic ruler HM Ershad, the movement expedited leading to the autocratic regime's fall in just eight days following his death. His mother said every country holds trial of the dictators but it is not happening in Bangladesh. “They are still being part of the grand alliance government and this will, I believe, remain as a stigma in the nation's history,” she added. Talking to reporters after the discussion, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal President Hasanul Haque Inu said, “We have to bring to book the culprits whether it is Ershad or the war criminals.” Chaired by BMA President Dr Mahmud Hasan, the discussion was also addressed by Workers' Party of Bangladesh President Rashed Khan Menon, MP Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Vice-Chancellor Prof Pran Gopal Dutta. Meanwhile, different political and socio-cultural organisations paid tributes to Dr Milon on the occasion, placing wreaths at Milon's grave on DMC premises and at Milon Memorial on DU campus.
