Bangladesh should portray itself not only as a victim of climate change effect but also as a role model of climate change adaptation in the Durban climate summit, suggested a parliamentary committee yesterday. The parliamentary standing committee on the environment and forest ministry also suggested that Bangladesh should raise its voice for creating an additional fund for climate displacement people. The House watchdog came up with these recommendations at a meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with Abdul Momin Talukder in the chair. The parliamentary body made the recommendations in reply to a presentation of Bangladesh's stance in 12-day summit begins in Durban, South Africa, today. Top officials of the ministry placed the power-point presentation before the committee members. Representatives from nearly two hundred nations are expected to attend the summit to deal with the problem of global warming. “We have asked so that all delegations from Bangladesh portray the country as a role model of climate change adaptation,” Saber Hossain Chowdhury, a member of the body told The Daily Star after the meeting. “The committee also suggested that Bangladesh will speak for fixing 2015 as the peak year for greenhouse gas emission.” Bangladesh also should point out that industrial and developed countries have disbursed only 10 per cent of total $ 30 billion so far which they had promised to give in three years. The three years will end in 2012, Saber Hossain, also an Awami League MP, said. The ministry officials informed the committee members that Bangladesh has already taken vast measures to uphold the country's identity in the climate change summit in Durban. On India's move to construct the controversial Tipaimukh dam, the committee asked the government to engage it at different levels of the government.
