Hanif's death anniversary today
Today is the fifth death anniversary of Mohammad Hanif, the first elected mayor of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) and an Awami League leader. On the occasion, Mayor Mohammad Hanif Memorial Foundation, Dhaka city unit of Awami League and different socio-cultural organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes, which include doa and milad mahfil, offering fateha at his grave and discussion. President Zillur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Speaker Advocate Abdul Hamid in separate messages paid their rich tribute to the memory of Hanif, says a press release. Hanif had served as the DCC mayor for eight years from March 12, 1994 to April 4, 2002. He was also a close aide to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was elected member of parliament in 1973.
