Media, NGOs very vocal

Foreign Minister Dipu Moni yesterday said women in Bangladesh are more active and their participation is more visible in political and decision-making levels. She said this when Elizabeth Broderick, sex discrimination commissioner of Australian Human Rights Commission, met her at the ministry. Dipu Moni informed that the government has taken various steps to improve condition of the old-aged women, girls and the working women. “Women representation has been increased in elected offices at different tiers of the government, she added. When the Australian commissioner wanted to know about the support given to the victims, Dipu Moni informed her that there is a one-stop service centre for the victims. While the government has legal and executive tools to support them, the civil society, media and NGOs are also very vocal against discrimination against women in Bangladesh, she added. Elizabeth informed that they are also working hard to improve the conditions of women, especially to reduce the gap of paid works between man and women in Australia. The Australian High Commissioner in Dhaka Justin Lee was also present.
