Awami League (AL) leader Suranjit Sengupta yesterday urged Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia to make public Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's reply to her letter about Tipaimukh dam. Suranjit, who was made a minister last evening, also urged Khaleda to come forward to resolve the issues like Tipaimukh and Teesta water sharing through bilateral discussions. The senior ruling party leader made the call while addressing a discussion at the city's Public Library Auditorium marking fifth death anniversary of Mohammad Hanif, the first elected mayor of Dhaka City Corporation. Bangabandhu Sanskritik Jote, a pro-government body, organised the commemorative discussion. Suranjit said construction of Tipaimukh dam project started during the regime of Ziaur Rahman, adding she [Khaleda] didn't protest against the dam during her tenure in three times. "There is no scope to do politics with Tipaimukh dam issue rather we should consider it as a national problem," he said. Speaking about water sharing of 52 common rivers originated in India, the AL leader said keeping up the national interest all the disputed issues between the two countries should be solved through bilateral discussion in a friendly way. He, however, said if Bangladesh fails to get its genuine right from India, there are international rules and regulations to resolve the issues. Pointing at BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, Suranjit said, "Don't oppose India for merely narrow political gain rather go to the way of bilateral discussion to resolve the issue." Jote Senior Vice-President and veteran film actor Faruque presided over the programme where AL Organising Secretary Ahmed Hossain, among others, spoke.
