A Dhaka court yesterday acquitted BNP leader and former water resources minister M Majid Ul Haque of a corruption case filed against him in 1996. Judge Mohammad Abdul Majid of the Special Court for Dhaka division gave the judgment in presence of Majid Ul Haque, who appeared before it on a stretcher. In the judgment, the judge said the prosecution has failed to prove the charges brought against the BNP leader. According to the prosecution, Majid Ul Haque took allotment of two cars from the government misusing his power when he was in charge of the ministry and used the cars that caused a loss of Tk 20 lakh to the government exchequer. An official of the now defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption (BAC) filed the case against Majid Ul Haque with Motijheel Police Station on October 20, 1996. After an investigation, the BAC pressed the charges against the former BNP leader on December 6, 1998.
