Free the footpaths

The pavements of the busy areas of the city remain occupied by hawkers selling clothes, fruits, vegetables and other things. These makeshift stalls block the movement of the pedestrians. These shops occupy most part of the pavements and force the walkers to use the roads meant for the vehicles. It is the people of the low income group who throng these shops. Again, some sidewalks are cluttered with building materials like bricks, pile of sand and rods. The pavements around the new market area in Chittagong are swarmed with makeshift shops that remain there all the year round. In the past, these shops were evicted on different occasions, but they again came back. It is the law-enforcers who allegedly collect tolls from these shops. The sidewalks of different busy roads of the port city are occupied by hawkers. We hope that the authorities will do something to free the footpaths and at the same time rehabilitate the hawkers.
