Media should play due role: Hamid

Staff Correspondent
Speaker Abdul Hamid said yesterday the mass media and democracy walk hand in hand and as long as the media remains active, democracy also remains vibrant. “Therefore, the mass media should play their due role in making people aware of the practice of democracy,” Hamid said at the inaugural ceremony of the annual general meeting of Dhaka Reporters' Unity at its premises. Praising the role of the media in establishing democracy, he urged journalists to work for the welfare of the country by writing objective reports and making constructive criticism. Hamid, however, alleged that a section of the media published news referring to unreal and fictitious sources, which was very unfortunate. “It has also happened that my name was mentioned as the source of news. But actually the reporter did not talk to me,” he said. He urged journalists to refrain from such practice. Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif also spoke on the occasion as special guest.
