Say 'no' to violence against women
Women's rights activists, lawyers and police officials yesterday stressed the need for creating people's awareness and their participation in anti-violence activities to build a society free from violence against women.
They were speaking at a views exchange meeting on preventing violence against women, marking the International Women's Repression Prevention Fortnight organised by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad at Cirdap auditorium in the city.
Speakers said existing laws were enough to stop violence but there was a tendency among the victims and their families not to file cases due to fear of public humiliation.
“To solve this problem we have to make guardians aware so that they can teach their children to open up their minds to fight repression,” said Rowshan Jahan Parvin, an activist of Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK).
She alleged that the police always try to avoid rape victims and instead of helping them to file cases they suggest settling the matter by local arbitration.
Visually impaired Uzzala Banik demanded that the government enact laws to help the victims get a fair process of justice.
Inspector General of Police Hasan Mahmood Khandker also spoke at the meeting. Mahila Parishad President Ayesha Khanam was in the chair.
