Call to play role for sustainable dev

Professional accountants can play a vital role for achieving sustainable development, speakers said at an international seminar here Wednesday. Chief guest at the seminar, Industries Dilip Barua said the country needs a sustainable political system for the economic development to sustain. If politics is not on the right track, unrest will follow, holding back the momentum of the economy, he said. The seminar, “Professional Accountants' Role for Sustainable Development”, was organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB) at a hotel in the port city. ICAB president Parveen Mahmud said in her welcome address that the ICAB is focusing on sustainable development. “We deeply believe that sustainable development is essential for advancing the economy and the region”, she said. AN Raman, president of the South Asian Federation of Accountants (SAFA), presented the keynote paper at the seminar while Sujeewa Rajapakse, vice-president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, and Mujahid Eshai, past president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan, spoke, among others.
