Butterflies flutter JU
Zahir Raihan auditorium at Jahangirnagar University yesterday took a colourful look as hundreds of live butterflies and pictures were put on display along the corridors and the surroundings.
Visitors and lovers of the fine-looking insects thronged the auditorium since morning to enjoy how "flying butterflies give nature a new life", the theme of the fair.
Over 400 live butterflies of around 70 species were exhibited in front of the auditorium and the botanical garden's butterfly hut, which drew the visitors' interest most.
Alamgir Kabir, a visitor from Dhaka, said people think JU is well-known for only winter birds, but he thinks thousands of butterflies that live here for years also add to the campus' beauty.
Alongside live butterflies, pictures and models of some 100 species of butterflies were on display at the fair.
JU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof Dr Mohammad Muniruzzaman opened the daylong fair at 9:30am, saying that butterflies are an inseparable part of the university's ecology.
The fair also featured photography competition, drawing competition on butterfly and nature for children, kite flying, and documentary and short film screening.
The zoology department of JU, Prokriti O Jibon Foundation, and Intraco Butterfly Park jointly organised the fair while private television station Channel i was the media partner. AK Accessories (Pvt) Ltd sponsored the event.
JU Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Dr Forhad Hossain, freedom fighter Ferdouse Priovasheni, and internationally acclaimed photographer Anwar Hossain attended the inaugural ceremony.
