The German ambassador to Bangladesh yesterday supported the demand of vulnerable and least developed countries for a legally binding agreement on climate change, terming it the only way to cap global warming at two degree Celsius. “We all need the present climate change negotiations in Durban to come up with tangible results,” said German Ambassador Holger Michael in a statement. Rising sea levels are already threatening the territories of small island states and vast stretches of the coastline in countries such as Bangladesh. Germany is aware of how pressing the climate change problem is and intends to reduce emissions by 40 percent by 2020 and by 80 to 95 percent by 2050, he said. Germany is also ready to play its part in financing measures for both long term and fast start fund. Between 2010 and 2012, the German government is providing these countries a total 1.26 billion euros in additional funds for mitigation and adaptation, he said.
