Two 'muggers' arrested

Police yesterday arrested two alleged members of a gang engaged in mugging using CNG-run auto-rickshaws during a five-day drive in the port city. The arrestees were Md Khairuzzaman Hiro, 35, of Chandanaish upazila in Chittagong, and Nejam Uddin, 28, of Chatkhil upazila in Noakhali. Halishahar police said they were investigating into a mugging incident that occurred on Agrabad Access Road on January 15, when a gang of four muggers on a CNG-run auto-rickshaw attacked a rickshaw passenger, Mofajjal Karim, with lethal weapons and took away Tk 30,000 from him. Following filing of a case in this connection, police raided the Halishahar area on January 17 and nabbed the auto-rickshaw driver along with his vehicle. Using information from the driver, police caught the two from Chandgaon area Friday night. Arefin Jewel, assistant commissioner of Double Mooring zone, said the two gave confessional statement to the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Azizul Islam yesterday, admitting their involvement with a mugging gang. Police are trying to nab other members of the gang, he said.
