Cabinet approves draft law on retirement age
The cabinet yesterday approved the draft of the "Public Servants (Retirement) (Amendment) Act, 2012", which earlier raised the retirement age of government employees to 59 years from 57 years.
The draft law will be placed in parliament's next session for enactment.
On December 26, President Zillur Rahman promulgated an ordinance in this regard to make effective a cabinet meeting decision on December 19 extending the age limit..
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who chaired the weekly cabinet meeting, asked the authorities concerned for quick steps to turn all the ordinances promulgated in last three years of the present government into laws.
Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan briefed reporters after the meeting.
On December 19, the cabinet secretary said the service age was extended as people's life expectancy has enhanced. The retirement age was last fixed in 1974, when the average life expectancy in the country was 46 years. It has now risen to 67 years.
The cabinet also approved in principle the draft of the "Bangladesh Workers Welfare Foundation (Amendment) Act, 2012" with a provision of punishment of the companies for their failure to make 5 percent contributions from their profits to workers' welfare fund.
The cabinet expressed satisfaction over the rate of implementation of cabinet decisions taken during the last three years. It took a total of 901 decisions during the period with 89.3 percent implementation rate.
The last BNP-Jamaat government in the first three years of its tenure had witnessed 71 percent implementation rate on its 488 decisions.
