Counsels allowed to meet Nizami at jail gate
The International Crimes Tribunal yesterday allowed two lawyers to meet Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami at Dhaka Central Jail on January 28 and February 11.
Any two of the three counsels of Nizami will meet him between 10:00am and 1:00pm on the days to discuss the case filed against him on charges of crimes against humanity.
The three lawyers are M Tajul Islam, Emran Siddique, and Nazimur Rahman.
Nizami was allowed to consult his lawyers at jail by the three-judge tribunal headed by its Chairman Justice Md Nizamul Huq after the detainee filed a petition on Sunday.
In the petition, Nizami said the tribunal on January 12 directed the jail authorities to allow his two lawyers to meet him on January 21, 28 and February 11 as per the Jail Code, but the jail authorities allowed his counsels only half an hour for the meeting on January 21.
He filed the petition, as half hour is not enough to discuss the case filed on charges of crimes against humanity during the country's Liberation War of 1971, he said.
Nizami prayed to the court that it orders the jail authorities to allow his counsels to meet him from 10:00am to 5:00pm on January 28 and February 11.
No lawyer was present at the court to move Nizami's petition yesterday.
On January 9, the tribunal accepted formal charges against Nizami for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity in 1971.
On December 11 last year, the prosecution submitted at least 15 charges of crimes against humanity against Nizami, which include genocide, rape, and arson.
