Suspend filling of century-old pond: HC

Staff Correspondent
The High Court yesterday directed the government to maintain status quo for three months on constructing structures on a 100-year-old pond in the court area of Barisal by filling it. In response to a writ petition, the court also issued a rule upon the government to explain in three weeks why its decision to fill the pond should not be declared illegal. The petition was filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh upon recent news reports that Public Works Department has taken permission from Barisal City Corporation and Department of Environment to fill the pond to erect multi-storey buildings there. Two Bangla dailies including the Prothom Alo published the reports. The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim came up with the order and rule after hearing the petition of the rights organisation.
