Alleged robber killed in Habiganj shootout
An alleged robber was killed in a "shootout" between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion in Habiganj sadar upazila early yesterday.
Rab identified him as Abdullah, 40, of Kadamtali under the upazila.
A Rab patrol team around 2:30am on suspicion challenged a microbus near Olipur Rail Crossing on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway, said Lt Kaosar Mahmud, in-charge of Srimongol camp of Rab-9.
The passengers opened fire on the Rab members from the vehicle, prompting them to fire back, in which Abdullah was shot dead, Rab officials said. The others, however, managed to drove away and flee.
Asked about the vehicle's number, Kaosar told The Daily Star that the microbus did not have any number plate.
On information, a team of Shaistaganj police rushed to the spot and sent the victim's body to Habiganj Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
The Rab team issued a press release describing the incident yesterday. The press release, however, did not explain how the body could have been left at the crime scene.
Two foreign-made revolvers and five bullets were recovered from the scene, as per the press release.
The Rab in-charge said Abdullah was accused in a number of cases including five for robberies and one for murder.
