Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations will begin on Wednesday with 14,20,057 examinees taking part from 26,855 educational institutions across the country. Although the number of examinees rose by more than 1.05 lakh this year, over 4.45 lakh students, who were registered as regular students of class IX, will not sit for the exam as they did not fill in the form. It indicates that a large number of students will drop-out. The exams this year would end on March 4. Last year, a total of 13,15,002 students registered for the exam. At a pre-examination press briefing at the secretariat, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said a total of 7,35,229 male and 6,84,828 female students will appear in the SSC and equivalent examinations at 2,464 centres under 10 education boards. He said a total of 10,52,969 students will take the SSC exams under eight general education boards while some 2,75,930 students will appear in Dakhil (secondary level of madrasa) examinations and around 91,158 in SSC vocational exams. The minister said necessary measures have been taken to ensure a peaceful environment and prevent cheating at examination centres. Nahid hoped that the political parties will organise programmes taking the exams into consideration. He also said the disabled students will get an additional 20 minutes for each paper in the exams. Overseas students will appear in the exams at seven overseas centres under the Dhaka Board.
