Hasina urges DU teachers

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday called upon the teachers of Dhaka University to make its standard of education world class to keep pace with the globe as well as regain the past glory of the university. “Earning foreign degree should not be your only goal, rather quality of education will have to be raised to upgrade the rank of Dhaka University globally,” she said. The prime minister made the comments when the newly-elected office bearers of Dhaka University Teachers Association (Duta) led by its President Professor Dr Anwar Hossain met her at her office yesterday morning. She said her government attached top priority to education as no nation can achieve its desired goal without the development of education. About some demands of the teachers, the prime minister said Bangabandhu Scholarship will be reintroduced in Dhaka University for the development of research in education sector. Sheikh Hasina suggested the teachers to setup a trust fund and collect fund from the alumni members and affluent section of the society to make the university self-reliant. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Education Dr Alauddin Ahmed, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Sheikh Wahid Uz Zaman, PMO Secretary Molla Waheeduzzaman, Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad and DUTA General Secretary Prof Ohiduzzaman Chand were present, among others.
