Political leaders hail CG's decisions on northern dists
Political leaders and former student leaders of different parties in Rangpur yesterday hailed the Chief Advisor's declaration to set up a university in Rangpur.
This will fulfill a long cherished desire of the people of northern districts and open up scope for social uplift and development of the region, they said at a press conference.
They urged the caretaker government to undertake a project immediately to fulfill the desire, they said.
Former district presidents Abdul Wahed, Azizul Islam, Shahinur Rahman and Majedul Islam Liton of Chhatra Union, two fractions of Chhatra League and Chhatra Moitri respectively spoke at the press conference.
They said a full-fledged autonomous university should have been set up in Rangpur much earlier considering its location but political governments did not pay heed to the demand.
They expected that the caretaker government would complete all formalities so that the next political government can not ignore it in any way.
Meanwhile, cross sections of people in Rangpur also hailed the caretaker government's 14-point programme for socio-economic development of northern region. The decisions were taken at a meeting of the advisors in Rangpur on February 2.
Talking to this correspondent, president of Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mostafa Azad Choudhury Babu said the decisions are a sincere attempt to remove poverty in northern districts.
Rangpur Awami League convener Mochaddeque Hosen Bablu said the people of Rangpur and adjoining districts will be grateful to the caretaker government if they can implement the 14-point programme including setting up of a university in Rangpur.
Gonotantri Party district president Mohammad Afjal said people want to see immediate implement of the 14-point programmes.
The leaders said earlier political governments took many high sounding decisions for development of northern districts but nothing meaningful was seen.
