Assault on RU teacher protested
Over 200 students of pharmacy department at Rajshahi University (RU) boycotted classes and exams yesterday protesting the alleged physical assault on the department chairman by a colleague on Wednesday.
At a human chain before RU central library, they also declared to continue boycotting classes and exams till Sunday and submitted a memorandum to Vice Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan demanding punishment to the accused.
The department staff said the accused, Prof Abdul Gafur, slapped and punched the department Chairman Prof Mamunur Rashid at the latter's office after being denied the report of Tuesday's academic committee meeting.
Prof Gafur was rebuked at the meeting as the students submitted a letter to Prof Mamunur on January 9 alleging that the accused misbehaved with students, said Prof Mamunur.
Prof Gafur could not be contacted on his mobile phone for comments.
The VC said steps will be taken after investigation into the incident.
