5 killed in road crashes

Five people were killed and three others injured in separate road accidents in Tangail, Thakurgaon and Dinajpur early Sunday and yesterday. Our Tangail correspondent reports: Two people were killed and three others injured when a bus rammed a rickshaw carrying them from behind on Bangabandhu Bridge approach road at Elenga in Kalihati upazila yesterday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Rikta Ayesha Siddique, 18, a student of Lutfar Rahman Matin College and Mosharaf Hossain, 35, the rickshaw-puller. Mosharaf died on the spot while Ayesha at Tangail General Hospital. Following the accident, locals and angry students of the college vandalised several vehicles and blocked the road for one and half hours demanding punishment to the bus driver and construction of a foot over bridge on the spot. In Thakurgaon, minor girl Rokhshana, daughter of Akhtarul of Pirganj upazila, died on the spot when a cart ran over her after she fell down from the vehicle onto the road at at Khongaon village in the upazila yesterday. In another accident, Saimun, 22, a trolley driver, was injured as the vehicle fell into a roadside ditch in Futani Bazar area of Ranishankoil upazila yesterday. He succumbed to his injuries at Pirganj Upazila Health Complex. In Dinajpur, an 11-month-old child died instantly as a sand-laden tractor hit a rickshaw-van carrying him at Muharapara in Hakimpur upazila on Saturday evening. The dead is Erfan, son of Shohrab Akand Mofidul, a resident of Hili town area.
