Faridee laid to rest

Amid love and sorrow, hundreds of people from all walks of life yesterday bade a final goodbye to their much admired thespian Humayun Faridee. The legendary actor was laid to rest at Mirpur Intellectuals' Graveyard yesterday afternoon. His mourning admirers, fans, well-wishers and relatives thronged the graveyard to pay an emotional farewell to the actor. Earlier, his body was kept at the Central Shaheed Minar for nearly three hours from 10:00am to enable his grief-stricken relatives, colleagues and people from every strata of society to pay their last tributes to the actor. Sammilito Sangskritik Jote made arrangements for a public viewing of Faridee's body at the Shaheed Minar. Razia Khatun, a housewife, came all the way from Kaliganj of Gazipur to see her silver screen hero. “I along with my friends set off from my house around 5:00am to see him. It's only affection that drives me here,” she said in a voice overcome with emotion. People had gathered at the Shaheed Minar even before Faridee's body arrived at the spot, where he was also given guard of honour. “He will be irreplaceable in both television and the film industry. We may never get another versatile actor like him,” said Pijush Bandopaddhay, one of Faridee's long time colleagues. Terming Faridee's performance unique, another noted theatre persona Ramendu Majumder said, "Humayun Faridee was an outstanding actor on stage. He blended with his characters and made them real.” Faridee, who mesmerised audiences with his acting skills in theatre, television drama, and cinema, breathed his last at his Dhanmondi residence in the capital Monday morning. He was 60. “We are mournful at his demise. He will remain alive among us through his work”, said Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu, president of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote. Following Bachchu's address, one minute's silence was observed to pay tribute to the artiste. Later a parade with cultural personalities and common people marched solemnly to Dhaka University's Central Mosque where the fourth namaz-e-janaza of Faridee was held. His body was then taken for burial. Faridee's first namaz-e-janaza was held in front of his residence around 12:45pm Monday while the second took place at Bangladesh Television complex in Rampura around 2:00pm. His third namaz-e-janeza was held at Bangladesh Film Development Corporation after Asr prayers on the same day. A freedom fighter, Faridee had been suffering from some complications including lung disease. He was admitted to a city hospital about eight or nine days ago and returned to his residence on Sunday. Born in Narinda in the old part of Dhaka on May 29, 1952, Faridee was a student of economics at Jahangirnagar University. His passion for acting began in his childhood. In the early 1980s, he joined Dhaka Theatre. He is well known for his extraordinary portrayal of roles in different plays including Songsaptak, Pathar Shomoy, Dui Bhai, Sheeter Pakhi, Kothao Keu Nei, Shomudre Gangchil and Kachher Manush. Midway in his stage career, Faridee joined film and won the hearts of millions through his work.
