Tk 1,561cr projects get Ecnec nod

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) yesterday approved 10 development projects with an outlay of Tk 1,561 crore, including one to increase quality seed supply in the country involving Tk 307 crore. The approval came at its meeting held at the NEC conference room in the city's Sher-E-Bangla Nagar. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting. “Of the total project cost, Tk 1,316 crore will come from the government exchequer while the rest of Tk 245 crore in project assistance,” said Planning Minister AK Khandker while briefing reporters after the meeting. Under the quality seed supply project, foundation seeds from breeder seeds and quality certified seeds from foundation seeds would be produced. Development of 12 new crop species by 2014 has been included in the project. The project would also provide training and technical assistance to public and private entrepreneurs, extension workers and farmers in order to produce quality seeds. Three agencies of Agricultural Ministry--BADC, BARI and BRRI--would simultaneously implement the project with a deadline of June, 2013. Islamic Development Bank (IDB) will provide Tk 245 crore as loan for the project. The Ecnec meeting also approved another project, titled 'Construction of building complexes in newly-created upazilas as well as the upazilas destroyed by river erosion' spending Tk 189 crore. Under the project, upazila complexes, upazila chairman quarters, UNO quarters, dormitory and two officers and employees' quarters would be constructed in each of 19 upazilas of the country. The meeting also approved 'Sheikh Sayera Khatoon Medical College & Hospital and Nursing Institute project' involving Tk 464 crore to establish a medical college at Gopalganj after the name of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's mother. Other projects got approval at the meeting include Employment and self-employment generation among the unemployed youths of seven monga-prone (seasonal extreme poverty) districts of northern region (Tk 63 crore- GoB).
