Teens commit suicide on Valentine’s Day
Two teenagers in love allegedly committed suicide on Valentine's Day by jumping off a mobile phone network tower in Kathi Bazar area under Sadar upazila of the district.
Mitu, 16, was a student of class-X at the local KKTHMC High School while Saud Sheikh, 17, studied at a school in the capital's Mirpur.
Police said locals rushed the couple to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital where doctors declared them dead.
The couple was found with their hands bound together with a scarf, police said.
Mitu is the daughter of Zahid Mollah of Khelna village in Sadar upazila and Saud is the son of Angel Sheikh of Kathi village under the same upazila.
Dilip Kumar Pal, headmaster of KKTHMC High School, said the news of the couple's love affair spread two years ago, after which Saud's family shifted him to a school in the capital.
Around two weeks back, Mitu's family married her off to a man in Mymensingh, added the headmaster.
The headmaster suspects that Saud met Mitu and planned the suicide when he returned to the village on Monday.
