Banshkhali Carnage
Deposition deferred for 5th time, new date March 15
A Chittagong court yesterday deferred for the fifth time the recording of witnesses' deposition in connection with an arson attack in Banshkhali on November 18, 2003 that left 11 members of a minority family dead.
Acting 3rd Additional District and Sessions Judge Syeda Hosne Ara Begum fixed March 15 as the new date for starting the recording.
Chittagong District Public Prosecutor Abul Hashem said the date was deferred due to a High Court (HC) stay order on the trial of one of the accused in the case Aminur Rahman Chowdhury alias Amin Chairman.
Amin Chairman, a local BNP leader, also cousin of BNP lawmaker Jafrul Islam Chowdhury of Banshkhali, filed a petition to the HC in January seeking the stay order.
He is among the 38 accused in connection with the carnage.
Plaintiff of the case Bimal Shil, lone survivor of the victim family, and some organisations including Hindu Bouddha Christan Oikkya Parishad has been alleging that Amin Chairman orchestrated the Banshkhali carnage.
Meanwhile, Bimal Shil filed a petition to the court to add two more sections of the Penal Code against Amin Chairman, the hearing on which would also be held on March 15, said the public prosecutor.
