'Arrest UP chairman for torturing wife'
Hundreds of women held a rally and demanded immediate arrest of a UP chairman in Hatibandha upazila who allegedly tortured his wife, mother of four daughters, for failing to mother a male child.
The rally held under the banner of Woman Development Committee, was brought out from Gotamari Bazar and ended at the premise of UP office in the upazila yesterday noon.
They would call tougher programmes if Abdul Jalil, chairman of Gotamari union parishad, is not arrested by a week, said Mukti Rani, vice chairman of the upazila.
Jalil has insulted all the women of the country through torturing his wife, said Nurunnahar Begum, a member of the committee.
On March 4, Shamsunnahar Begum, 38, also an assistant teacher at Sonar Deghee Registered Primary School, was beaten up by her husband at Gotamari village for failing to mother a baby boy.
Later, the daughters of the victim admitted her to the local upazila health complex with serious injuries.
