Events on Independence Day

Different government, non-government, socio-cultural and political organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes in the capital as well as across the country marking the 41st Independence and National Day to be observed today. President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion of the day. Zillur Rahman in his message urged all concerned to make the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) a centre of excellence in solving national issues, reports BSS. “I am confident that all irrespective of party affiliations would play a responsible role in fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the countrymen,” said the president. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged the nation to remain united to foil evil design of the anti-liberation forces who are trying to thwart development process of the government. The ruling Awami League will hoist the national and party flags at Bangabandhu Bhaban in the capital and party offices across the country at 6:00am, place wreaths at the National Mausoleum in Savar and the portrait of Bangabandhu in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban. A discussion will be held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre at 3:30pm tomorrow. AL chief Sheikh Hasina will address the event. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will pay tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing floral wreaths at the National Mausoleum this morning. The BNP will bring out a procession from the party's central office at the city's Nayapaltan on March 28. Ekattarer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee organised a rally at Central Shaheed Minar last night to commemorate the black night of March 25 in 1971 and press home their demand to declare March 25 as “International Genocide Day.” Jagannath Hall Alumni Association held a discussion, cultural programme and screened a documentary at TSC of Dhaka University on the killing committed at the university hall at the night of March 25, 1971. Bangladesh Communist Party, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh, Dhaka University Teacher's Association, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Amra Muktijhodhar Santan also have taken various programme marking the day.
