Huge electronic goods seized at Chittagong port
Customs officials here yesterday recovered huge quantity of electronics goods from two containers imported under false declaration through Chittagong port.
Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Director (security) Lt Col Moazzem Hossain said officials of the port security department on Wednesday intercepted two container carriers carrying these two containers while going out of the port through gate No. 4 without scanning violating rule.
Omar Faruk, superintendent of Audit, Investigation and Revenue (AIR) branch of Chittagong Customs House, said they opened the two 40-feet equivalent unit containers yesterday afternoon for physical examination.
The officials found 677 pieces of 32” LCD television of Sharp brand from one of the containers while they recovered 243 pieces of LCD television of different brands from another container till filing of the report at 6:30pm.
There were huge quantity of mobile phone sets in the second container while counting would take several more hours, said the AIR superintendent adding that the import documents shows one HU Accessories Limited located at Plot No. 69 of sector 7 of Chittagong Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) as the importer of the consignment.
Name of one JRT C&F Business Limited was found as clearing and forwarding (C&F) agent in the documents and the importer declared to import 790 cartons of accessories like adhesive paper tape.
Deputy Managing Director AKM Jahirul Hoque of HU Accessories Ltd claimed their industry had no relation to the documents like LC (letter of credit), import permission (IP) from BEPZA and bond number related to the import of the consignment.
He said the fact would reveal if the officials of the C&F agent are inquired.
