RMG workers go berserk at factory in Manikganj
Garment workers went on rampage at their garment factory in the district yesterday protesting termination of their fellow workers and misbehave with them by its officials.
The authorities closed the factory for the next two days, police said.
The workers of Monno Attire Limited started damaging the factory at Monno Coty in Gilonda around 8:00am when they came to know that the authorities sacked 13 workers on Saturday and termination of more workers was underway. They also locked the main gate of the factory.
Police brought the situation under control at 9:00am and the workers opened the main gate around 9:30am following request from ASP Shivalaya Circle Mohammad Wahiduzzaman and OC of Ghior Police Station Ashraf-Ul-Islam.
The officials, however, fled the scene when the workers staged demonstrations protesting irregularities done by the factory officials, said police sources.
The workers alleged that the authorities often terminate workers without issuing any notices and it does not give their payment according to the labour law.
They also alleged that production manager of the factory Sentu and floor in-charge Rafik always misbehave with them. Many of them earlier had lost their job while demanding justice for the misbehave, they added.
The authorities also hire local musclemen to stop their protest against the irregularities, alleged the workers.
OC Ashraf-Ul-Islam said factory owner Haruner Rashid Khan Monno directed to transfer the production manager and assured them of paying arrears of the workers within May 2.
The workers left the factory around 3:00pm after police officials confirmed the owner's assurance.
The factory now is bound to terminate some workers as there is no sufficient work at the factory, said the factory authorities.
