9 killed in road crashes

Nine people, including four of a family, were killed and 11 others injured in separate road accidents in Chandpur, Jessore, Panchagarh, Brahmanbaria and Chittagong on Saturday and yesterday. Our Chandpur correspondent reports: Four members of a family died and their relative was injured as a truck ploughed into their house in Bahariar Chhalamat Khan intersection area of the sadar upazila early hours of yesterday. The deceased were day labourer Selim Sheikh, 45, his wife Faizunnesa Begum, 35, and their two children Russell Sheikh, 15, and Shilpi Akhtar, 13. Injured Rakib Sheikh, 6, was undergoing treatment at Chandpur Sadar Hospital. Locals said the accident occurred at around 1:00am when a cattle feed-laden truck skidded off a road at the intersection as its driver lost his control over the steering and ploughed into the house of Selim. The four family members who were asleep at that time, died instantly while Rakib, Selim's nephew, was injured. Our Benapole correspondent adds: Trucker Touhiduzaman, 27, was killed instantly when his truck collided head-on with another truck on Jessore-Khulna road in Poddobila area in Jessore sadar upazila yesterday. In another accident, Nemai Chandra, 56, died as a truck hit him on the same road in Patibila area in Chougachha upazila of Jessore yesterday. Our Thakurgaon correspondent says: Ruhul Amin, 42, was killed on the spot and seven others were injured when a bus hit a pick-up van from the opposite direction on Panchagarh-Tentulia road in Heliport area in Panchagarh sadar upazila on Saturday night. Injured Mokaddesh Ali, 26, Shahjada, 30, Abu Sayed, 37, Alamgir, 28, Alauddin, 26, Asraful, 45, and Sohel, 22, were undergoing treatment at Panchagarh Sadar Hospital. In Brahmanbaria, Md Hafez Mia, 40, was killed on the spot and three others were injured when a truck hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at West Kuttapara in Sarail upazila on Saturday night. The injured, including the auto-rickshaw driver, were admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital. In Chittagong, an unidentified man, aged around 40, who was injured as a bus hit him at BRTC Circle under Kotwali Police Station on Saturday night, died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital early hours of yesterday.
