Three die as truck hits rickshaw

Three people, including a mother and a daughter, were killed and two others injured when a truck hit their rickshaw-van on Dhaka-Tangail road at Narasinghapur in Ashulia of Savar early yesterday. The deceased were Piyara Begum, 40, her daughter Amena Begum, 17, and Sabuj Mia, 30, the rickshaw-van puller. Amena's 11-month-old son Piyas and her cousin Mostofa Talukder were injured in the accident and were undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Piyara and Amena, workers of a garment factory in Ashulia, was hailing from Amtoli upazila in Barguna while Sabuj from Satkhira. The incident took place around midnight while they were returning from a nearby hospital where Piyas was admitted due to diarrhoea, injured Mostofa, said Ashulia police. “A speeding truck hit our van from behind and we skidded off the road,” Mostafa said. Badrul Alam, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station, said police rushed to the spot and sent all five to a nearby hospital where doctors declared Piyara, Amena and Sabuj dead.
