'Evacuate risky hill people before monsoon'

Staff Correspondent, Ctg

Landslides have claimed the lives of many over the years and the risk shoots up every rainy season at the foot of the hills in Chittagong city. Seminars and symposiums are usually held ahead of the rainy season saying the people living there have to be relocated but little gets done. Yesterday, the Divisional Committee for Hill Management directed all organisations concerned to evacuate people residing at the foot of the hills ahead of the monsoon. Photo: Anurup Kanti Das

The Divisional Committee of Hill Management yesterday urged the government and non-government organisations concerned to gradually evacuate people from risky slopes in the port city hills before this monsoon, which begins mid-June. At a meeting, president of the committee Sirjaul Haque Khan also requested the organisations to make detailed reports on the risky hills and vulnerable people and submit them within two or three weeks. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Foyez Ahmad said they had taken initiative to help the evacuation by providing financial assistance from the district administration fund. The meeting elected Jafar Alam, director of the Department of Environment (DoE), as coordinator of the committee for inspecting the risky hills in and around the city. Sirjaul Haque Khan, also the divisional commissioner, chaired the meeting at the Circuit House. Government high-ups, among others, were present on the occasion.
