Death of Youth in Chittagong
Cop harassment alleged
Leaders of four local organisations of Kapashgola area in Chittagong city yesterday alleged that police arrested a local to harass him in a case over the murder of a youth in a mob beating on March 29.
But police denied the allegation, saying the arrested was a witness and they were only trying to get information out of him.
The leaders claimed that Nurul Huda Bacchu, general secretary of Kapashgola Moholla Committee, arrested on May 6, was being tortured through various methods, including electric shocks.
The leaders of the organisations -- Kapashgola Moholla Committee, Chawkbazar Ward Awami League, Kapashgola Primary School Governing Committee and Kapashgola Masjid Committee -- presented their allegations at a press conference at Chittagong Press Club.
Nurul stood against a fundamentalist quarter, making him a target to their ill-motives, they said, adding that they would go for tougher movements if Nurul was not released immediately.
However, Sub-Inspector Alamgir, also investigation officer of the case, of Kotwali Police Station denied the allegations.
The youth, Sujan, 23, had gone to the area on the fateful day to meet his girlfriend. The girl's uncle, Jahid, and two relatives, Jamal and Jafar, caught Sujon and mislead the locals into beating him, saying that he was a thief, he said.
“The mob beat the boy dead but we suspect it was a planned, cold-blooded murder over the affair,” said the SI, adding, “We are trying to arrest the rest of the accused.”
