Stolen cotton of Tk 40 lakh recovered

The Detective Branch (DB) of police yesterday recovered 56 bales of stolen cotton worth Tk 40 lakh from Latifpur under Pahartali Police Station in the port city Tuesday. They also arrested three persons in this connection. They are Salamat Ali, 30, of Sitakunda, Mahmud Hossain Moudud, 26, of Begumganj, and Nur Kader, 50, of Chandanaish. Md Maniruzzaman, deputy commissioner of DB, Chittagong Metropolitan Police, said the consignment of cotton was being taken to the capital from ABR Spinning Mill in Chittagong on a covered van of Mojadded Transport Agency Monday night. After the van went missing on the way, Md Mokhlesur Rahman of the transport agency filed a case with Pahartali Police Station accusing the three men on Tuesday. The detectives conducted a drive in Sitakunda upazila that day and found the covered van standing empty on a road and arrested its driver Salamat Ali, he said. On Salamat's information, police recovered the stolen cotton from SR Trading at Latifpur and arrested Mahmud, a covered van driver, and Kader, a guard of SR Trading, he added. The official said a group of people was involved in stealing garments, fabrics and cottons in City Gate and Sitakunda area and selling the goods in Narayanganj and Dhaka.
