Thousands marooned in 35 villages of Lalmonirhat

Flash flood caused by heavy rain for the last few days marooned several thousand people in 35 villages of four upazilas. Water from hills across the border entered the areas along Teesta and Dharla Rivers, said Water Development Board (WDB) sources. The flood affected villages include South Goddimari, Char Dowani, Char Sindurna, Char Dawabari and Paruliya under Hatibandha upazila, Char Votmari, Char Kakina, Rudreshewar and Jamirbari in Kaliganj upazila, Kadomtola, Balapara and Char Gobordhan in Aditmari upazila, Char Kurul, Mogholhat, Char Kulaghat, Char Bowalmari, Rajpur, Char Kalmati, Khuniya Gachh, Char Gokunda and Char Milon Bazar under Sadar upazila. While visiting the areas yesterday, this correspondent found that many villagers took shelter on the embankments and roads. WDB officials said the water level of Teesta was flowing below five centimeter of its danger level at Daliya point of Hatibandha upazila while Dharla was flowing four centimeter below danger level at Kulaghat point in Sadar upazila yesterday morning. Solayman Ali, 65, of Char Dawabari village said ” Torrential rain in the last four days and water from the upstream increased the water level of Teesta triggering flash flood. “The floodwater entered our home on Monday night”, He added. Abdus Sobur, 48, of Sindurna village in Hatibandha, said “The flood water inundated 320 homes in the village.” Lalmonirhat WDB executive engineer Enayet Ullah said the water level of Teesta and Dharla increased in the morning but it came down at noon.
