110 Jamaat-Shibir men charged

Police pressed charges against 110 Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir leaders and activists, including Jamaat Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami, in a case filed after the murder of Rajshahi University student Faruk Hossain. Faruk, a final-year mathematics student and Bangladesh Chhatra League activist, was hacked to death and dumped in a manhole on the night of February 9, 2010 during an attack by hundreds of armed Shibir men on the campus. Nearly a hundred others were wounded. The tendons in the hands and legs of four of them were severed. Police submitted the charge-sheet on July 8 and informed journalists of the submission yesterday. Court Inspector Rabindranath Biswas informed that the charge-sheet would be placed before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court today. The accused include Jamaat Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, Nayeb-e-Ameer Delawar Hossain Sayedee, Rajshahi city unit Jamaat Ameer Ataur Rahman and General Secretary Abul Kalam Azad, Katakhali municipality Jamaat Ameer Mazedur Rahman, Motihar unit Jamaat Ameer Abdus Salam and former RU syndicate member Siddik Hossain. Three of the accused, Shibir's RU unit President Shamsul Alam Golap and Amir Ali Hall unit President Ekram Hossain and former Rajshahi ward councillor Gias Uddin, gave judicial confession in connection to the case. In it they stated to have attended a rally in Rajshahi on February 7, 2010, where Nizami was present, and launched the attack on the campus as per their organisation's plan. Three groups, led by Shamsul, Shibir's RU unit General Secretary Mobarak Hossain and Shibir's Rajshahi City Corporation Ward 26 unit President Hafizur Rahman, carried out the attack, read the charge-sheet. Hafizur was found dead in Chapainawabganj a few days after the violence. The Shibir leaders were in frequent contact with local Jamaat leaders and top brass of Jamaat during the attack, read the charges. Biswas said five investigators went through the mobile phone call records of the accused and gathered the witnesses and evidences.
