Changes to be placed in next JS session

Amendments to the Chittagong Hill Tracts Land Dispute Resolution Commission (CHTLDRC) Act, 2001 would be placed for passing in the next parliamentary session due to be held in September, said Law Minister Shafique Ahmed yesterday. “There will be no such rule in the act that violates the constitution,” he told reporters after attending an inter-ministerial meeting at the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Affairs, said a press release of the law ministry. Once the act is amended, the CHTLDRC can consider settling the disputes between the Bengali settlers and the CHT people over illegally grabbing of land in the region since March 9, 1997, said Shafique, who chaired the meeting. He said the meeting has finalised the proposed amendments made on the basis of suggestions from the CHT Regional Council. The government finalised decisions regarding the13 amendment proposals to the act in two meetings including yesterday's. Chakma Circle Chief Raja Debashish Roy said decisions regarding amendments to the act were taken on the basis of consensus. Land Minister Rezaul Karim Hira, Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi, State Minister for Law Qamrul Islam, State Minister for Land Mostafizur Rahman, State Minister for CHT Affairs Dipankar Talukder, Khagrachhari Hill District's Refugee Affairs Taskforce Chairman Jatindra Lal Tripura and other CHT leaders were also present at the meeting.
