At least 15 people were injured as police charged batons on locals, who were protesting a delay in the rescue operation for missing passengers of a trawler that capsized in Shitalakkhya river in Narayanganj yesterday morning. Police, however, said almost all passengers of the trawler were either rescued or swam ashore themselves and that no complaint regarding any missing people was received by police. Witnesses said two divers of Fire Service and Civil Defence started search for the missing people around 8:30am. Meanwhile, a salvage vessel of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) started operation to recover the trawler when a group of locals started pelting stones at the BIWTA team alleging them of delaying the rescue operation, witnesses said. As police resisted the locals, they also pelted stones at the law enforcers. At one stage, police charged truncheons on the mob, leaving 15 people injured, witnesses added. The trawler, which capsized due to overloading, was recovered around 12:00 noon but no bodies were found in it, BIWTA sources said.
