Int'l Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples today

International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is being observed by the country's indigenous communities amid non-cooperation from the government in recognising and observing the day. The government in March asked district and upazila administrations not to cooperate, patronise or even join the day's celebrations, an order that outraged indigenous people struggling to get state recognition and establish their rights. “We shall observe the day with a sad mood but expect that the government will realise its faults,” Sanjeeb Drong, general secretary of Bangladesh Adivasi Forum, told The Daily Star yesterday. “We hope to get cooperation from the police and administration,” he added. The indigenous communities will hold a daylong programme in the capital's Central Shaheed Minar. This year's theme of the day is “Indigenous Media, Empowering Indigenous Voices”.
